SEO Web Promotion: A Search Engine Optimization Overview
Thursday, August 14th, 2008Are you still waiting to see a positive return on your investment for the beautiful website you put up a few months ago? Do you get frustrated and annoyed when you hear stories of how your competitor is raking in thousands of dollars weekly (or daily!) just by being on the first page of Google? My guess is that your competitor is using search engine optimization techniques (SEO) to pull targeted paying customers to his website. But since you’re here on my blog reading my article, I’m going to give you an overview of things to look for as you analyze your competitor’s SEO web promotion strategy.
Pre-Planning and Keyword Research
One way to find out what keywords and keyword phrases (i.e., longtail keywords) your competitor is targeting is to locate his website through the search engine results page (SERP) and analyze it. Your first hint at what keywords he’s targeting is right there under your finger tips — it’s the keyword or keyword phrase you used when you started your search!
Think about it. What did you enter into the search box to find competitor’s website?
- the company name?
- the product they sell?
- the service they offer?
- their location?
- a recent news item about them?
In other words, how did you find them? If they’re you’re competitor and they offer products and services similar to what your business offers, wouldn’t it make sense to use some of those keywords and keyword phrases on your own website?
When you found them, were they located on the SERP’s first page or did you have to go through a few pages to locate them?
The strategy behind pre-planning and keyword research is to think about the keywords and keyword phrases your potential clients use to find you. Once you’ve figured that out (and there are more ways to figure that out than I have time to go into in this article) then it’s up to you to make use of those keywords and keyword phrases on your own website. That way, your competitor’s clients could possibly become your clients when they find you on the SERP when they do a search on those very same keywords and phrases.
Well Orchestrated Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Web Promotion
Web designers and web developers use search engine optimization (SEO) to improve website ranking potential. SEO is a marketing strategy which involves writing content and using web page programming code to make it easy for search engines to find a web page based on a user’s search criteria. A dilligent SEO web promotion expert will use SEO along with other marketing techniques to improve the chances of a website appearing as an authority on a subject with the help of targeted keywords and keyword phrases.
The benefit of having your site appear as an authority is that your search engine page rank will improve. If your content is truly informative and relevant to your visitor’s keyword phrase search, Google, Yahoo!, MSN and others will reward you by giving you better visibility. The more visibility, the more you are seen as an authority.
Unfortunately getting top billing as an authority these days is more complicated than merely matching up keyword phrases with customer searches. That’s why you’ll want to find a good SEO web promotion expert when you’re ready to take down your competition. It’s a good idea to get a general idea about what you’re looking for when seeking out the help of a web promotion specialist. Luckily, you’ll find lots of tips, tricks, and resources online and right here on this website.
